Providing Personal Professional Dentistry to Make
You Smile |
We want to conveniently and
clearly communicate with you, so we’ve provided answers to the
questions we hear most often. If you have additional questions,
please feel free to directly ask Dr. Akerman or her staff.

Dr. Akerman subscribes to the latest
industry journals to keep current on research and development in
the dental industry. She invites experts in the field to come and
provide personal instruction to our staff, devotes significant
amounts of time to continuing education studies, and belongs to
local dental associations that provide peer consultation and
review of difficult cases. Dr. Akerman also ensures that our
staff pursues ongoing studies in our areas of expertise, so that
as a team and as individuals, we're familiar with the latest
techniques and materials available.

Our offices accepts
nearly all major insurance plans. However we do not
allow insurance regulations to limit excellence in dental care.
To determine if your plan is one of these simply call one of
helpful insurance coordinators. We are more than happy to
discuss the particulars of your plan with you before any
treatments that you may undergo.

We accept cash, personal checks and all
major credit cards. Your insurance co-pay is due at the time of
your visit, but we’ll be happy to help you structure a payment
plan after that time to pay out any remaining charges. For
expensive or extensive procedures, we're also pleased to offer
financing plans.

You have several choices, any of which may
be the right answer to whiten your smile. First, a process
called bonding restores teeth that are chipped, cracked,
misaligned or discolored. We simply use a porcelain material to
rebuild your teeth and make them look natural. For dramatic and
durable results, we can place thin ceramic shells called
porcelain veneers onto the surface of your teeth. Alternatively,
bleaching can lighten stains caused by tea, coffee, food,
smoking or age, using an at-home bleaching kit or an in-office
supervised treatment. Dr. Akerman can help evaluate your
potential for whitening your teeth, based on their current color
and the causes of any discoloration. Please call our office, and
we’ll be happy to set up a complimentary cosmetic dentistry
consultation.

Bleeding gums are definitely something to
be concerned about. They can be caused by any of the following:
improper, rough scrubbing instead of gentle, circular brushing
motions; using a hard-bristled tooth brush instead of a soft
one; plaque and/or tartar buildup below the gum line; or gum
sensitivity due to gingivitis or periodontal disease. Most of
the time, we find chronic gum disease to be the culprit. Your
best and safest solution is to contact our office for an
evaluation appointment.

We understand how anxious many people can
be about visiting the dentist. That’s why we strive to create
a relaxing atmosphere: including amenities such as pillows, blankets, and chair massages. We
also have relaxing personal headphones and CD players available
in every treatment room. If necessary, we offer nitrous oxide or
a prescription sedative prior to treatments. When you come in
for your evaluation, let us know how you’re feeling, and
we’ll put you completely at ease.

Millions of people struggle with
halitosis, or bad breath, despite daily teeth brushing. Here’s
a checklist of procedures that can eliminate the problem: twice
daily brushing, daily flossing, and tongue cleaning; regular
professional cleanings; and careful cleaning of any dentures or
removable dental appliances. If your hygiene is meticulous and
the problem persists, we can offer several solutions. First, we
can provide a plastic tool called a tongue scraper that cleans
away bacterial buildup on your tongue and significantly
alleviates odor. Or, we can recommend a specially-prepared
breath treatment system, designed to actually break the
odor-causing sulfur bonds that cause bad breath. Finally, if we
suspect a systemic or internal problem such as an infection or
underlying condition, we may recommend a visit with your family
physician or specialist to identify the cause.

Dr. Akerman has a number of ways to
improve the look of your front teeth without the use of braces.
For slightly crooked or unevenly worn teeth, a bit of reshaping
and the addition of porcelain veneers may be sufficient to give
them a bright, uniform look. In other cases, it may be necessary
to attach “invisible” braces behind the front teeth. We’d
be happy to consult with you about the appearance of your front
teeth and create a treatment plan to accomplish your objectives.
